Driving California’s Highway 1 is one of the most scenic road trips in the country. Allow at least five days so you can stop often and enjoy the views.
Day 1: San Francisco to Santa Cruz
Leave the city early, stop in Half Moon Bay for coastal views, and end the day on the Santa Cruz boardwalk.
Day 2: Monterey and Carmel
Visit Monterey’s waterfront, drive 17-Mile Drive, and wander through Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Day 3: Big Sur
This is the highlight of the trip: dramatic cliffs, ocean views, and stops like Bixby Bridge. Fill your gas tank and download offline maps, since cell service can be limited.
Day 4: San Simeon to Morro Bay
Stop at the elephant seal viewing area, then continue to Morro Bay for its famous rock and relaxed harbor.
Day 5: Santa Barbara
End your trip with beaches, a historic downtown, and plenty of restaurants.
Important Notes
- Parts of Highway 1 in Big Sur can close due to weather or landslides, so check current road conditions before you go.
- Drive north to south for ocean-side views.
- Book lodging early for summer.
